OpenStreetMap is built by a community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.
Geofabrik provides free downloads of the data from OpenStreetMap from their server. Most of these datasets are updated on a daily basis.
Files ending in .shp.zip are ESRI Shape Files (once unzipped) that you can process with almost any GIS software, such as the free and open source QGIS.
These files are open data: you are free to use it for any purpose as long as you credit Geofabrik, OpenStreetMap and its contributors, ideally:
'© Geofabrik GmbH and OpenStreetMap contributors'
If you alter or build upon the data in certain ways, you may distribute the result only under the same licence - Open Data Commons Open Database Licence (ODbL). See the OSM Copyright and License page for more details.
Northern Ireland has an active community of contributors to local and global knowledge through OpenStreetMap. To find out more about contributing, visit the OSM Wiki.
